Vinton is large enough to support a convenient lifestyle and yet small enough to foster a feeling of “community as family.” This cooperative spirit moves through the local government as well. In fact, the town is partnering with Roanoke County in the development of the Vinton Business Center, a 100-acre site along State Route 634. Previously known as the McDonald Farm, this site will be a cornerstone for additional economic development. Vinton draws residents and visitors alike to its historic downtown district, hosting the popular Vinton Farmers Market and many other festivals and special events.

Close proximity to the leading city of Roanoke gives Vinton residents easy access to state-of-the-art healthcare and educational institutions. The Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital campus is also home to the Carilion Medical Center for Children as well as centers for cancer, healthy aging, heart, breast, home health, and wound care. Carilion also manages a Level 1 Trauma Center and premier transport services to meet emergencies with rapid, expert response. Distinguished as a major teaching affiliate for the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the hospital also provides patients with easy access to nearby specialty clinics, family medical centers, and a host of personalized treatment options. Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital takes a family-centered approach to healthcare and serves as the region’s leading referral source for women’s and children’s care. The Carilion Bone and Joint Center and Carilion Physical Medicine facility is located in Vinton, as are many skilled professionals in private practice.
Nearby Roanoke and Salem are home to public and private colleges, including the innovative Roanoke Higher Education Center. This consortium of 16 member organizations provides more than 200 programs of study. Participants include Averett University, Bluefield College, Ferrum College, Hampton University, Hollins University, the Jefferson College of Health Sciences, Mary Baldwin College, Old Dominion University, Radford University, Roanoke College, TAP-This Valley Works, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Virginia, Virginia Intermont College, Virginia Tech, and Virginia Western Community College. Roanoke is home to Hollins University and ECPI Technical College while Salem offers the second oldest Lutheran-affiliated college in the nation, Roanoke College.
