The Lynchburg region is rapidly gaining a reputation for an outstanding quality of life, combining first-rate services and advantages with a low cost of living and a warm community spirit. Since the city’s founding along the banks of the rolling James River, Lynchburg has matured into a region center for business and culture. The strong industrial base is enhanced by significant commercial and retail activity for a diverse economy. Technological advancement is a high priority, and Lynchburg consistently appears on the list of the “Top 10 Digital Cities.”

In addition to a network of major highways that ensure easy commutes, Lynchburg is home to a regional airport where several commercial carriers provide a global gateway. Primary thoroughfares include US Routes 29, 501, 221, and 460. The city is nestled in the panoramic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the geographic center of Virginia and has been referred to as the “City of Seven Hills.” This community has long been recognized for its civic activism, as residents and planners work together to manage and preserve the area’s natural, historical, and cultural resources.

Quality educational opportunities are available on every academic level, from preschool through post-graduate studies. Lynchburg is known for its outstanding educational assets, including career and vocational programs and workforce training centers. Central Virginia Community College offers two-year degrees and certification programs, affordable college-track programs, and continuing education—all just minutes from home. The Lynchburg area is home to a number of respected private colleges that enrich the environment culturally as well as intellectually: Liberty University, Lynchburg College, Randolph Macon College for Women, Virginia University of Lynchburg, and Sweet Briar College. These institutions serve as anchors in the community, providing resources and opportunities that are unrivaled in cities of similar size. Arts education is a high point in Lynchburg, home to the Academy of Fine Arts and the Virginia School of the Arts. The latter has earned an international reputation for excellence by providing high-school students with an excellent pre-professional arts training program.

Healthcare services and facilities are state of the art, anchored by Lynchburg General Hospital and Virginia Baptist Hospital—both within the Centra Health system. Lynchburg General or LGH offers a 270-bed emergency and critical care center with specialties in cardiology, emergency medicine, orthopedics, neurology, and neurosurgery. Recognized nationally for its orthopedic and cardiac programs, LGH is a consistent “Solucient 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospital.” Virginia Baptist is licensed for 317 beds and serves Central Virginia with comprehensive medical and surgical specialties. Virginia Baptist provides a regional resource for cancer care, women’s and children’s care, behavioral health, outpatient surgery, physical rehabilitation, and home health. The hospital is the proud recipient of Press Ganey’s prestigious Summit Award, healthcare’s most coveted symbol of achievement in patient satisfaction.

Lifestyle
Rich in history, unspoiled natural beauty, and gracious Southern hospitality, Lynchburg is a city of wonderful neighborhoods and a vital, diverse economy. Well-kept older homes, some that have been beautifully restored and renovated, combine with newer construction for a wide selection of attractive housing. Downtown Lynchburg is revitalizing to reclaim its place as the region’s economic, cultural, and social heartbeat. New attractions, improved public spaces, and renovated buildings create a bustling environment by day and an inviting maze of dining and entertainment options at night.

Lynchburg’s natural setting along the James River in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, along with forested valleys and rolling hills, gives the area a distinctive sense of place. More than 800 acres of lush parkland provides opportunities for passive and active recreation. The Bill Foot Recreation Area alone offers 20 mountain biking and hiking trails. The Blackwater Creek Trail is another delightful regional attraction, linking neighborhoods, natural areas, stream valleys, and the riverfront. Hunting, fishing, camping, horseback riding, sports leagues, tennis, golf, boating, water sports, and winter sports can all be enjoyed against the backdrop of breathtaking scenery.

Those who appreciate the arts will find wonderful venues in public and collegiate settings that showcase top regional, national, and international talent. Seating as many as 1,000 guests, Cattle Annie’s Restaurant & Entertainment Center is best-known for hosting top-billed artists. Amazement Square is Central Virginia’s first multi-disciplinary interactive children’s museum, while The Nature Zone invites hands-on exploration of the natural world. The Lynchburg Museum documents the city’s colorful past, as does the collection of grand architecture and landmarks. The Old Court House dates back to 1855, fashioned as a Greek temple overlooking the James River and showcasing the region’s finest collection of memorabilia, furnishings, costumes, and industrial history. Point of Honor is the Federal-era mansion of Dr. George Cabell, Sr., friend and physician of the patriot Patrick Henry. Numerous regional sites from Natural Bridge and Smith Mountain Lake to the National D-Day Monument and the site of the Battle of Appomattox Court House expand the opportunities to learn and explore. Few cities in America can rival Lynchburg for its balance of attractions and amenities with small-town friendliness and natural beauty.
