Excelling in natural beauty, Herkimer County is well-served by Interstate 90 in a location that is equidistant from Albany International Airport and Syracuse Hancock International Airport. The Adirondack Park covers much of the northern region, providing world-class recreational opportunities against the backdrop of spectacular scenery. Along with excellent primary and secondary schools, the county is home to one of the nation’s top two-year colleges. Part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, Herkimer Community College is widely recognized for student success and academic excellence. More than 3,200 students take advantage of affordable tuition, state-of-the-art facilities, and nationally ranked athletics on a 500-acre residential campus in the picturesque hills above Mohawk River. Students can choose from more than 40 associate degree and certification programs that excel in providing real-world experience. Those transferring to a four-year SUNY institution are guaranteed full acceptance of credits, although the college maintains similar transfer agreements with many other colleges and universities. Residents have a number of other options close to home, including the renowned SUNY Polytechnic Institute, Utica College, and the two-year Utica School of Commerce business school. The City of Syracuse is home to the highly regarded private institution of Syracuse University, the private LeMoyne College, and SUNY’s Upstate Medical University.

First-rate healthcare services and facilities are anchored by Little Falls Hospital in Little Falls City, part of the Bassett Healthcare Network. Founded in 1893, the hospital has been proudly serving the needs of Herkimer County residents for more than 125 years. Dedicated to personalized attention and clinical excellence, the hospital offers 25 acute-care and special care beds along with a swing bed program and short-term rehabilitation services. The Emergency Department provides comprehensive care under the Bassett Healthcare Emergency Services and Trauma network. Little Falls Hospital also provides a Health Center for primary care, advanced imaging, infusion therapy, laboratory services, and a same-day surgery program that utilizes the latest equipment and techniques. Nearby Utica serves a regional population with two major hospitals on four campuses under the Mohawk Valley Health System. Syracuse is home to the nationally ranked Upstate Medical University, the Upstate University Hospital Community Campus, the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, and other major healthcare including a regional Veteran’s Administration hospital.

Serving as Herkimer County’s only city center, Little Falls blends the charm of a small town with urban conveniences. The Mohawk Valley Art Center provides a center for cultural enrichment, promoting and presenting visual and performing arts along with arts education. The city is home to wonderful restaurants, antique centers, a gem shop, lush parks, recreational facilities, and attractive neighborhoods in a charming atmosphere. Services are first-rate including a full-service hospital and good schools, while Veterans Park offers a public library, local marina, municipal golf course, history museum, and athletic courts and fields. Convenient to Little Falls City’s commercial, entertainment, arts, healthcare, and recreational amenities, the Frankfort and German Flatts area offers the serenity of rural life and small-town charm in quaint villages and tiny hamlets. The Village of Ilion nestles against the northwestern border of the town near the scenic Mohawk River. The Village of Mohawk is located at the northern border, while North Ilion lies just north of Ilion Village adjacent to Mohawk Village. The entire community takes advantage of the programs and facilities at the Ilion Free Public Library. The village is also the proud home of the county’s largest employer, the Remington Arms Company, established in 1816 and distinguished as the oldest continuously operating manufacturer in America. The local Remington Museum displays the wide variety of products once manufactured at the plant, bicycles, sewing machines, typewriters, cash registers, and cutlery. The village also features the Remington Country Store near the manufacturing site.

Herkimer Village enjoys an ideal location near Interstate 90, midway between the urban amenities in Syracuse and Albany. Nestled against the north side of the Mohawk River, this area is just 13 miles southeast of Utica. The village is closely associated with the town of the same name that surrounds it, and locals often refer to them as “the Herkimers.” Charming and quaint, Herkimer Village is home to the beautiful campus for Herkimer County Community College and several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Herkimer Courthouse, Herkimer County Historical Society, the Reformed Church, the Palatine German Frame House, and the US Post Office. The Herkimer-Middleville area is popular with rock hounds for its deposits of quartz crystals known as Herkimer Diamonds. Fast-growing Schuyler Town is drawing newcomers to attractive residential developments and business opportunities in Schuyler Business & Industrial Park. Rural Fairfield Town is north of Herkimer Village and east of Utica.

Nestled in the picturesque Mohawk Valley along the West Canada Creek, Newport Town offers premier recreational activities including fly‐fishing, kayaking, canoeing, tubing, horseback riding, hiking, cycling, golfing, and every imaginable winter sport. Unique historic sites abound, crowned by one of the few remaining four-arched stone bridges and the Stone Octagon House. The rural towns that sprawl over picturesque southern Herkimer County include Litchfield, situated on the hills that overlook rims of the Mohawk and Sauquoit valleys. Rising more than 1,000 feet from the valley floor, elevations like Wheelock Hill and the Dry Hills create scenic views for adjoining towns. Winfield Town is situated in the rolling hills and valley streams that feed Unadilla River on the Allegheny Plateau. The Village of West Winfield and tiny hamlets dot the township, located along the Route 20 Scenic Byway.
