TRANSPORTATION / HIGHWAY TRAVEL
The Metro District of the Minnesota Department of Transportation oversees a comprehensive of highways that include 320 interchanges and more than 1,170 bridges. The Metro District is also home to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and covers the seven-county metropolitan area of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties as well as Chisago County.
Major Regional Highways
Interstate 94 enters the metro area from the east and runs northwest from Minneapolis. Spur routes form the Interstate 494/694 loop, and Interstate 394 continues west at the point where I-94 turns north. Interstate 35 splits in Burnsville in the southern section of the Twin Cities metro region and continues as Interstate 35E into St. Paul and Interstate 35W into Minneapolis. These highways rejoin to the north in Forest Lake and continue to Duluth as I-35. A number of state and federal highways create a strong network of regional thoroughfares, including US Highways 10, 12, 52 (Lafayette Freeway), 61, 169 (Mendelson Highway), and 212.
