ACADEMICS / ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION
Those who prefer a private-school education will find abundant options in religiously affiliated or independent schools. Since each private school is operated as a separate entity, the burden of research and selection falls upon the parents. Some emphasize structure; others stress independence and creativity. Accreditation, academic excellence, opportunities for extra-curricular activities, ethics and values, attitude toward discipline and the general educational atmosphere are all valid considerations. The Department of Education publishes an annual California Private School Directory. Inclusion in the directory is arbitrary and does not imply approval or disapproval of the school’s course of study or staff. The following resources may be of help in exploring opportunities for a private education.
