TAX & LICENSE / HUNTING & FISHING LICENSES
Any person who is 16 years of age or older must possess his or her own fishing license when taking any fish, shellfish, reptile or amphibian from California’s ocean or freshwater resources. California requires a hunting license for large and small game, from waterfowl to bighorn sheep. Duck and bird stamps are also necessary. California also requires hunter education training for anyone who has not formerly held a California hunting license, does not have a hunter education certificate of completion, or does not have a valid hunting license from another state. Classes are available throughout the state.
The cost for fishing and hunting licenses vary with the type of license, the duration of the license, and your residency status. Eligible low-income seniors at least 65 years of age and certain disabled veterans and other severely physically disabled residents may receive reduced-rate licenses.
