The strong commercial activity and vast market reach of Camden County continue to draw even more residents to this sweeping area that more than half a million people already call home. Centralized in the Northeast Corridor, Camden County is located in the heart of the nation’s fourth largest market and enjoys immediate access to a superior transportation network. In addition to its location and natural resources, this area has established a dynamic business climate where corporations, entrepreneurs, and government leaders work together for common goals and mutual benefit. One of the most dramatic examples of this synergy is the revitalization of the Camden City waterfront, not only designed to enrich the area economically but culturally.

Major growth in retail, high technology, manufacturing, agriculture, and other industries throughout its diversified municipalities gives Camden County a balanced economy. The most densely populated of Southern New Jersey’s counties, Camden represents the region’s most concentrated and vital source of business and retail activity. The county is home to more than half of the region’s largest office parks and houses a significant number of the manufacturing companies in Greater Philadelphia. This area has also earned a national reputation in biological testing and research.

Services
Few areas are more ideally situated for business and commerce than Camden County, where a total of 15 states are less than a day’s drive. Four bridges connect the area to Philadelphia, the nation’s fourth largest market. Major arteries such as the New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 95, and Interstate 295 are all within minutes of any point in the county. Amtrak and the PATCO high-speed commuter rail lines provide fast and convenient public transit, while New Jersey Transit blankets the county with convenient bus routes.

The rebuilding of the major corridor of Route 70 doubled its capacity, and the popular beach-bound Atlantic City Expressway begins in Camden. Philadelphia International Airport is just minutes from Camden County, while the recently expanded Atlantic City International Airport is within an hour’s drive. The revitalized Port Camden, the nation’s second largest deepwater harbor, has expanded facilities and contributes more than one billion dollars to the local economy each year.

Camden County’s excellent public educational system is complemented by a wide selection of private schools, both parochial and independent. Outstanding colleges and universities are close to home for local residents. The county features three college campuses but also offers vocational and technical schools with programs for high-school students and adults of all ages. An extensive library system serves as a quality resource at every educational level.

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, operates one of its three major campuses in Camden. Located in the heart of the bustling waterfront district of the city, Rutgers-Camden is internationally recognized as a vibrant research university with an enviable reputation for teaching, research, and service. The 40-acre Rutgers-Camden campus combines with Camden County College to offer a remarkable variety of graduate and undergraduate degrees and coursework. Even the two-year Camden County College excels in opportunity. Students are able to take advantage of the college’s joint venture with Rowan University. Camden County also boasts two campuses associated with the prestigious University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the Camden Campus of Rutgers University Law Schools.

As a vital contributor to the vitality of Metropolitan Philadelphia, Camden County claims one of the highest concentrations of healthcare facilities in the nation. Within the county are hospitals affiliated with the country’s largest health sciences institution, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The Cooper University Hospital and its associated Children’s Regional Hospital are highly regarded as one of the leading academic medical centers in the Delaware Valley. Among the other leading major medical facilities are those managed by the Kennedy Health System. Three outstanding acute-care teaching institutions provide a wide spectrum of general care and advanced specializations to the entire region with locations in Cherry Hill, Stratford, and Turnersville.

Another state-of-the-art facility in Camden County is Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, South Jersey’s regional Level III perinatal center, as well as the regional center for cardiac diagnostics and surgery, dialysis and transplants, and rehabilitation. The Virtua West Jersey Health System is distinguished as one of the state’s largest multi-hospital groups, operating three acute-care hospitals in the Camden County area. This cluster of respected institutions guarantees that a skilled professional in every specialty will be available at a moment’s notice. Emergency care centers, same-day surgery centers, specialty institutions, family practice clinics, rehabilitation, various therapies, and many other supportive services are available to meet every need.

Lifestyle
Camden County offers an abundance of lifestyles that include historic colonial towns, well-established communities with spacious homes, and affluent suburban areas like Cherry Hill. Areas such as Voorhees that have been discovered in recent decades provide handsome new construction in elegant neighborhoods, while older municipalities like Camden City are enjoying a resurgence of activity. In the longer established corners of the county, historic districts are being restored and revitalized to meet the demands of a new era. Affordability, proximity to major metropolitan centers, and state home-financing programs continue to be the drivers of Camden County’s strong residential appeal.

Camden County residents demonstrate a keen appreciation for the fine arts and cultural performances, evidenced by the area’s abundant musical festivals, galleries, and theatrical productions. Spectacular venues showcase everything from Bach and classical ballet to the biggest names in rock and roll. The elegance of venues like the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Gordon Theatre at the Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts or the Walter Rand Theatre at the South Jersey Performing Arts Center contrasts with the exhilarating, high-energy atmosphere of the Tweeter Center at the Waterfront.

Performing arts companies in every discipline are prolific in this culturally rich region. Community drama at its finest can be found in the productions of the Haddonfield Plays and Players. Broadway comedies, dramas, and musicals are presented by professionals and semi-professionals to the delight of local audiences. Major historic attractions include Historic Haddonfield, Barclay Farmstead Museum, Campbell Museum, and Pomona Hall Museum as well as the home and final resting place of Walt Whitman. Festivals and celebrations fill the four-season events calendar in the various municipalities, encompassing the talent of local artists and renowned professionals in musical productions, arts and craft shows, and concert series that range from military and pops to string and blues bands.

Galleries and fine arts abound in local venues and university cultural centers. The Walt Whitman Cultural Arts Center, for example, offers something for every taste and age group — concerts, theater, poetry readings, classical productions, jazz tunes, Latin music, fine art shows, special exhibits, and events dedicated to delighting the children. For those who want to harmonize culture with the beauty of nature, Camden County offers more than 3,700 acres of parkland that includes 2,000 acres of lakes and streams, nearly 10 miles of horse trails, 15 miles of bicycle trails, and 25 miles of multi-use trails. The county’s 120-acre environmental studies center on the edge of the peaceful Pinelands National Reserve alone offers five miles of panoramic hiking trails.

Camden County boasts swim clubs, tennis and racquet clubs, a popular hockey and ice-skating center, and challenging golf courses that include the world-famous Pine Valley — rated by Golf Digest as one of America’s finest. Other recreational facilities scattered throughout the county include athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, cinder tracks, boat ramps, picnic areas, and a new county marina adjacent to the New Jersey State Aquarium at Camden. This celebrated aquarium has already joined the list of the nation’s finest attractions, surpassing all projected expectations for tourism appeal. For a complete change of scene, the exciting New Jersey shoreline area, the Pocono Mountains, or even the lights of New York City are all within easy driving distance.

Thousands of retail establishments thrive in Camden County, ranging from the full-service department stores to home centers, warehouse price clubs, and upscale fashion boutiques. An outstanding retail atmosphere and vast shopping amenities are a direct result of the quality, density, and diversity of this area’s rich marketplace. Because this county is accessible to much of Southern New Jersey and a short drive from Philadelphia and its many suburbs, it has become a magnet for many of America’s finest retailers and their innovative ventures.

The region’s first enclosed shopping center, Cherry Hill Mall, was also one of the first centers of its type in the nation. This refurbished and generously expanded facility is among the largest in Southern New Jersey, capturing nearly one-quarter of the total traffic within the entire Philadelphia region. Everywhere in Camden County that residential developments thrive, shopping centers have been quick to follow. Echelon Mall now serves the growing and affluent neighborhoods of Voorhees with its vast array of department stores, specialty shops, and upscale boutiques.

Considering Camden County’s excellent location, first-rate educational opportunities, healthcare leadership, attractive suburbs and rural beauty — few communities in the nation could offer more. Regardless of the area they choose to call home, newcomers can be assured of an unrivaled quality of life.
