Gillespie County is located in west central Texas. Fredericksburg, the county’s largest town and county seat, is seventy miles west of Austin and sixty-five miles northwest of San Antonio. Gillespie County comprises 1,061 square miles. Most of the county is on the Edwards Plateau, except for the northeastern corner, which is in the Llano River basin. The primary soils are generally shallow and clayey and not particularly suited to intensive agriculture. The terrain features plateaus and limestone hills broken by the Pedernales River, with an elevation ranging from 1,100 to 2,250 feet above sea level and averaging 1,747 feet above sea level.

Gillespie County attracts people from across the nation to its quiet lifestyle. The county is home to a number of historic buildings, museums, antique stores, bakeries, and restaurants. Some of the attractions in Gillespie County are the Admiral Nimitz State Historical Park and the Pioneer Museum, both in Fredericksburg; the Lyndon B. Johnson State Historic Park and Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, in eastern Gillespie County; and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, on the Gillespie-Llano county line. This part of Texas is home to over 100 wineries and vineyards and Fredericksburg is the center of Texas wine country. There are more than 50 wineries and tasting rooms located in Fredericksburg and Gillespie County and many more located within a short drive of the county. Wine production in the county dates back to the original settlers who used the native mustang grape to produce wines.

This part of Texas is known as Hill Country and it is full of rolling hills, colorful wildflowers, and winding country roads. Outdoor enthusiasts will find anything that they could want to do, whether golfing at one of the local courses, hiking, biking or even fishing in one of the rivers or lakes in the region. Shopping and dining choices are varied and inspired, including shops and restaurant that specialize in locally produced items. Fredericksburg and Gillespie County are home to a number of ranches, farms and pecan orchards as well as the famous wineries. Residents enjoy a high quality of life in the county with a broad choice of housing. Residents will find ranches, farms, single family homes on acres of land or even homes on a runway, there is truly something for everyone.

Residents of the county enjoy a great choice of educational opportunities close to home. The Fredericksburg Independent School District serves the county with 1 primary, 2 elementary, a middle school and 2 high schools. All of the schools are high preforming and offer families a great choice of programs for their kids. Athletics are well represented at the k-12 level as well.

For higher education, The Hill Country University Center provides affordable higher education opportunities for residents of the Texas Hill Country region. The majority of students attending classes at the HCUC participate in a 2+2 program in which they complete their lower-level freshman and sophomore courses offered by Central Texas College, earning an associate degree, then transfer to Texas Tech University to complete upper division junior and senior-level courses, earning a bachelor’s degree. Degrees at the HCUC are designed to align with local workforce needs and employment opportunities such as teaching, business, the wine industry, and hospitality. In addition to these programs, the Schreiner University system which is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church has a main campus in the Texas Hill Country and first year campuses throughout the state. Texas Tech at Fredericksburg offers bachelor’s, master’s, and graduate certification programs. With 20 areas of study, students can earn a degree that meets their career goals. The Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech in Fredericksburg offers academic and certificate programs that equip students to pursue a career in the Texas wine industry.

Comprehensive health care services are available in Gillespie County. Fredericksburg is home to several primary and specialty care physicians, clinics and facilities. The city also has dentists who offer treatment in the areas of family, pediatric, orthodontic, periodontal, and cosmetic dentistry. A variety of health care alternatives are available including chiropractic, acupuncture and more. Hill Country Memorial is a full service facility that serves the residents of the county for all of their hospital needs. In addition, residents don’t have far to go to find all of the specialty services of San Antonio.

Fredericksburg’s history dates back to the town’s founding in 1846 when the first German settlers arrived in the Texas Hill Country. Fredericksburg is a charming city founded on a history of people looking to make a better life for themselves in a place where neighbors, friends and families worked together to create a special lifestyle. This drive for community is what give the city its warm character today. And that character is best seen on the historic main street of the city. Main Street is the center of everything in Fredericksburg, with more than 150 shops, boutiques and art galleries as well as restaurants, wine tasting rooms, brewpubs, the two local museums and a lot more. Shopping has been a popular pastime in the city for decades and the shops on Main Street are all locally owned and operated by local residents. The city does not allow franchises and chain stores in the National Historic District (which runs along Main Street) meaning that the experience is truly unique to the city. With the wine industry being such a big part of the county, its no surprise that there are more than 50 wineries and tasting rooms located here. Gillespie County wineries have been producing a variety of quality wines that have won both state and national honors. For those who enjoy a celebration with their neighbors, Fredericksburg is unique on that it is home to more than 400 festivals and special events each year. Not all of these events are large but there are several that are notable. Oktoberfest, which is the largest festival in Fredericksburg, takes place the first weekend of October each year. The three day festival of Fredericksburg’s German roots includes multiple stages of traditional music and traditional German foods. The Fredericksburg Food & Wine Fest is another of the large festivals that draws people to the city – with more than 50 wineries and dozens of food producers coming together in downtown Fredericksburg for a day of local food and drink. Summer favorites include the Hill Country Film Festival, Stonewall Peach JAMboree and Rodeo, Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks, Gillespie County Fair, Summer Horse Racing and the very popular Light the Night Christmas Parade down Main Street. Whatever the adventure residents and visitors want, they will be able to find it in Fredericksburg. The community embraces it roots, protects its lifestyle and welcomes everyone.
