Entrance Requirements
The Commonwealth of Virginia requires that children and youth attend school if they have reached their 5th birthday by September 30 and have not passed their 18th birthday. At the time of registration for a new student, a parent or guardian must be present and provide proof of residency in the school district, the registrant’s official birth certificate, Social Security number, and physical exam report. Transcripts or last report card from previous school attended and custody papers if applicable are other documents that will be helpful at registration. Virginia requires a physical examination that includes a tuberculin skin test for all students new to Virginia. For kindergartners, the exam must have taken place within the past 12 months. Physician-signed proof of required vaccinations in proper doses must also be provided. For details or answers to specific questions, contact:

Magnet Schools
Roanoke City Schools boasts the largest magnet program in Virginia. Magnet Schools are developed around a theme and feature special programs and additional resources not typically found in public schools. Programs range from dance, computers and aviation to piano, architecture, languages and the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
