Registration Requirements
The public school system in Maine ensures quality educational options on every academic level. Registration of students in grades K-12 requires a legal birth certificate and an updated immunization record. Maine state law requires that each child have a physical exam within one year prior to school entry. Cut-off dates for kindergarten vary with the school district. You will also need your child’s social security number and bring proof of residency or a Maine driver’s license in order to register. For assistance in locating your school district, contact:

Assessment & Accountability
Maine set up learning standards for all public school students. MEA, the Maine Educational Assessment test, is the state’s tool for evaluating progress toward those standards. For more information, contact:

Maine Public Education Administrative Units
School Administrative Unit
Two or more municipalities pool their educational resources in an SAU. One school committee administers the education of grades K-12 through a superintendent.
Community School District Two or more municipalities and/or districts form a CSD to build, maintain, and operate educational facilities.
Unions of Towns Two or more administrative units share a superintendent but retain their own school boards and budgets.
Cities or Towns with Individualized Supervision A school committee administers the education of all grades in the city or town through a superintendent.
Education in Unorganized Territory EUT’s are responsibility of the state, operating schools in unrecognized township municipalities.
