Called “Beard’s Station” in the 1800s for Joe Beard’s sprawling 263-acre farm, the community of Crestwood changed its name in the early 1900s to reflect its location on the crest of a ridge. Crestwood retained its rural nature and agricultural status as a world-renowned producer of orchard grass seed until subdivision development began in the late 1960s. Located in southern Oldham County just across the Jefferson County border, Pewee Valley is characterized as a rapidly growing suburban area that works diligently to maintain the look, feeling, and ambiance of a small town. Begun as a small settlement in the early 1800s on the road from Louisville to Brownsboro, the town began to take shape in 1851 when the railroad brought wealthy settlers who built country estates. At that time, the settlement was known as “Smith’s Station.” A picturesque and tight-knit community gradually developed, and citizens renamed their town after the pewee bird. Since the construction of Interstate 71 in the 1960s, Pewee Valley has grown steadily with lovely new subdivisions springing up all around the community. Today’s residents are able to enjoy the tranquility and charm of Pewee Valley, a town that showcases the beauty of its original tree-lined streets and historic buildings.
