This awe-inspiring legacy to J. Pierpont Morgan’s insatiable desire to collect the finest art from around the world is also the oldest public art museum in the nation. Wadsworth Atheneum displays nearly 50,000 works of art that span more than 5,000 years of human creativity. The Atheneum is noted for a number of remarkable “firsts,” including the first American museum to acquire a Miro, a Mondrian and a Caravaggio. It was also the first to present an exhibition of surrealist works.
