Nestled along the Ohio River in southeastern Indiana, Dearborn County encompasses some of the state’s oldest original territory and most significant historic architecture. From its early roots as an agricultural and industrial community, Dearborn County is experiencing considerable residential growth and modern development as a result of its advantageous location within the tri-state Greater Cincinnati region. A strong network of state and federal highways ensures a quick commute to regional destinations. Interstates 74 and 275 provide north-south connections, while east-west links are available via the major thoroughfares of US Highway 50 and State Routes 48 and 350.
Services
The educational system is well developed, encompassing quality public school districts and private schools from preschool through high school. The Southeastern Career Center offers a unique opportunity for students to acquire technical skills that are integrated with academic coursework as preparation for careers in business and industry. The center serves a six-county area including Dearborn and Ohio counties.
Other options for higher education within a reasonable commute include Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana-Terre Haute, the Purdue University Cooperative Extension in Versailles, the University of Southern Indiana, Indiana University Southeast in Evansville, Indiana University-Purdue in Columbus, Indiana University Bloomington, and Indiana State University in Terre Haute. Kentucky offers Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights. Among the institutions in Greater Cincinnati are the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, Thomas More College, and Miami University.
Lawrenceburg anchors the healthcare services that are available within a few minutes drive from the Indiana communities that are encompassed in Greater Cincinnati. Dearborn County Hospital has long been committed to upgrades and investments in new technology in order to offer its patients the most advanced diagnostics and treatment. Some of these innovations include Capsule Endoscopy, a non-invasive imaging device used primarily for viewing the small intestine. Endovascular Repair is a new procedure for treating life-threatening abdominal aortic aneurysms. CheckMate for Mammography and Hawkeye PET/CT Imaging equipment bring diagnostic imaging and the reading of the images they produce to state-of-the-art levels. In addition to these impressive advancements, the hospital provides comprehensive medical and surgical services that meet nearly every need close to home.
Lifestyle
Historic Dearborn County claims a varied topography that blends northwestern flatlands with rolling hills divided by several creeks that form long, lush valleys. The Ohio River forms part of the county’s southern boundary, while the Whitewater River meanders through the northwestern corner. The architectural grandeur in Dearborn County is truly a point of pride, showcasing styles that range from early 19th century Federal and Greek Revival structures to the elegant Queen Anne or the cozy bungalow of the early 20th century. Many of these structures hold great historical significance not only to the region but to the entire state. While many have been saved and are being restored, others provide the potential for affordable older properties that are ideal for preservation and reuse. The housing selection blends many beautiful older homes with vibrant new construction in growing communities or subdivisions with a country flavor.
The influence of Interstate 275 has driven growth and development in the area’s relatively small cities, including yesterday’s sleepy hamlet of Bright and the upscale modern development of Hidden Valley Lake. The introduction of Argosy Casino created waves of new interest in Lawrenceburg as well. The Perfect North Slopes ski area is a regional attraction, an ideal complement to the four-season recreational opportunities in and near Dearborn County. Skiing, boating, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, biking, horseback riding, tennis, and golf are all popular pastimes in this naturally scenic area. Regional attractions across the Ohio state line include King’s Paramount Island and The Beach Waterpark, Coney Island, a number of fine museums and cultural centers, and the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. Northern Kentucky offers the Newport Aquarium, Boone County Arboretum at Central Park, the Kentucky Speedway, and Turfway Park.

The unincorporated area of Bright is the fastest-growing of Dearborn County’s communities and sprawls over Harrison, Logan, and Miller townships in the northeastern part of the county. In fact, Bright is one of the most rapidly developing areas in all of Indiana. The population has increased nearly 65 percent within the past decade and projections call for another 30 percent jump within the next five years. Settled in the 1800s as a farming community, the area began transforming into a modern bedroom community with the completion of Interstate 275. Winding lands, heavily wooded lots, and lush hills preserve a rural flavor and create scenic backdrops for lovely new homes. Many newcomers are willing to trade a longer drive to work for the affordability of truly attractive housing and the richness of the area’s natural beauty. In the late 1990s, Greendale annexed nearly four more acres that included the Valley Woods subdivision and effectively doubled in size. Today, the wheels are in motion to turn this sleepy small town into a growing suburb that balances residential development with increased economic activity. Interstate 275 has been instrumental in shaping Greendale’s progressive attitude, linking the city with Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and the regional international airport. Historic homes and well-kept older properties harmonize with more modern construction for a wide range of home styles and price ranges.
