Rich in natural resources including fertile soil, Monmouth County was first settled by farmers. From these rural roots, the region’s townships have matured into a comfortable and livable home for millions of residents. Many of the fields that were once tilled by early settlers have transformed into residential neighborhoods, quality schools, and businesses. Monmouth enjoys 27 miles of pristine ocean coastline and 26 miles of bay shoreline. Vast acres of open space and four major rivers — Manasquan, Navesink, Shrewsbury, and Shark — add picturesque landscapes.

Some farmland remains in Monmouth County, producing a bountiful harvest for local, state, and national markets. Commercial fishing has managed to survive and thrive as a viable industry. However, a flourishing business community and modern industrial parks have replaced much of yesterday’s countryside. Particularly in recent decades, service and research industries have added another dimension to the area’s economic base of agriculture and recreation.

Finance, communications, pharmaceutical and biochemical research, insurance, and entertainment are all business interests that are well-represented in Monmouth County. National corporations have accelerated development, attracting a highly skilled and well-educated workforce while expanding local employment opportunities. Attractive tax rates, a strategic location for major markets, and the relaxed lifestyle of a country setting continues to draw small, mid-size, and large businesses.

Services
Residents of Monmouth County can depend upon a first-rate network of healthcare and social services. In addition to the excellent care delivered by area hospitals, specialized services are available in both private and non-profit centers throughout the county. Such leading institutions as Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel or CentraState Medical Center in Freehold combine acute-care facilities with extensive community programs designed to promote wellness, vitality, and health on all levels. Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center are leading-edge teaching hospitals, and Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank operates an acclaimed cancer center.

Well-served by transportation facilities, Monmouth County boasts a network of efficient highways that include the Garden State Parkway, Interstate 195, Routes 9 and 34 north to south, and Routes 35, 36 and 71 for coastal access. Major bus transportation is available along most of these routes to Manhattan, and rail service follows along Route 35 to the North Jersey coastline. New Jersey Transit operates the North Coast Line, which has 12 railroad stations located within the county. Newark International Airport is a convenient 40-minute drive away.

Monmouth County provides a strong and viable educational system for area youth in its network of public, private and parochial schools. Helpful to students of all ages as well as to area industry, the Monmouth County Career Center and Vocational Board of Education provide excellent career training. Students in pursuit of higher education are well-served in Monmouth County by Brookdale Community College in Lincroft and Monmouth University in West Long Branch. A plethora of nationally and internationally recognized colleges and universities are located within easy commuting distance of any point within Monmouth County, including Rutgers and Princeton.

Lifestyle
Through careful planning and zoning in the challenge of corporation-level economic growth, Monmouth County has evolved into a remarkably congenial environment in which to live and work. Serving as a well-established tourist attraction, the county is alive with historic sites and tours, museums, galleries, theaters, and concert halls. To that impressive roster, Monmouth adds the attraction of sidewalk cafes, summer starlight concerts, festivals, celebrations, local parades, dreamy river cruises, old-fashioned carriage rides, antique districts, and grand old estates shaded by ancient trees.

Outdoor pleasures and the beauty of nature are never far away for Monmouth residents, who need only escape to one of the county’s beautiful outdoor areas to enjoy camping, hiking, water sports, bicycling, golfing, horseback riding, or ice-skating. Indoor arenas and race tracks offer recreational and spectator sports such as harness and thoroughbred racing or drag and stock car racing. Fishing and boating remain highly popular recreational activities, enhanced by numerous private and public marinas, many of which offer party and charter cruises. Ponds and lakes further the interests of fishing enthusiasts, many stocked with bass and trout.

Aficionados of shopping can choose from full-scale indoor malls, strip shopping centers, or flea markets where small-town congeniality blends with high tech convenience. Smaller towns and villages often feature distinctive and charming shopping districts filled with specialty shops, curiosities, and antique treasures. Many farms still operate in Monmouth County, offering seasonal fruits and vegetables that are readily available for picking and purchasing.

Along the Jersey Shore are beautiful, well-maintained beaches extend from the tip of Sandy Hook to Brielle. The endless array of leisure-time activities in Monmouth County makes it the place for all seasons. Cosmopolitan amenities are available in this idyllic suburban setting, including fine dining, gourmet take-out, and superb catering services.

Newcomers will find comfortable communities with tranquil residential areas, quaint town centers, acres of lush woodlands, rolling pastures, and miles of sparkling shoreline. Monmouth is home to the largest number of horses of any county in New Jersey, boasting equine farms, trails, riding schools, clubs, and other equestrian activities. The pace of daily living in Monmouth can be as energetic or relaxed as you desire in a region that caters to every imaginable lifestyle.
