Lifestyle
Named after the famous explorer Zebulon Montgomery Pike who discovered Pike’s Peak in Colorado, beautiful Pike County claims a rich history of agriculture and forestry that continues today. At the same time, the trend away from crowded urban areas into the serene countryside is transforming the face of the county and creating a population boom in Pike County. Currently, nearly 75 percent of county residents are commuters to regional employment centers. Even this statistic is sure to change. The new millennium saw the construction of a 148-acre business park and the acceleration of economic development, enhanced by Interstates 75 and 85. Pike County blends a progressive attitude about quality growth with a reverence for the past, most evident in historic preservation. The most striking example is the majestic 1825 brick courthouse designed by Golucke and Steward in the Romesque Revival/Colonial Revival style.
“Plenty of wide open spaces” are ideal for beautiful new residential communities, properties with vast acreage, and country manors. Within the county’s small municipalities, friendly neighborhoods showcase well-kept older homes. Pike County’s rural beauty has made it ideal as a film location for a number of movies, including the classic “Fried Green Tomatoes.” The tiny town of Juliette is capitalizing on the movie’s fame, drawing visitors to the undeveloped beauty of 3,600-acre Lake Juliette and the Old Mill Motorcycle Museum in the Old Juliette Grist Mill. Zebulon attracts enthusiastic shoppers to the Market on the Square, a seasonal delight. Residents enjoy an active arts council and a wide array of recreational amenities as well as opportunities to enjoy outdoor adventure. Sponsored bicycle rides, the Meriwether Pike Scenic Highway, the Tri-County Hunt Club events, or the Horse Fun Day at the Pike County ABEC Park are just a few unique activities and attractions. Colorful festivals dot the calendar with elaborate and inspiring celebrations of holidays, history, and culture. For live entertainment, the Hollonville Opry House and the Williamson Music Barn mix country, bluegrass, and gospel music. Take your time discovering the hidden facets of picturesque Pike County, a wonderful place to call home.
