The county’s historical heritage is showcased in the stunning architecture of Druid Hills, a turn-of-the-century neighborhood featuring impressive Tudor-style houses set among winding streets lined with flourishing shade-trees and flowers.

Lithonia was established in the 1840s from a pioneer settlement called Cross Roads, once located at the intersection of two major regional roads. According to local folklore, Lithonia was named by an ingenious Greek teacher who combined the words Litho (rock) and Onia (place). During the 1880s, the city’s many prosperous granite quarries brought the region international attention. Contributing to a huge industrial boom, the quarries brought stone cutters from England, Scotland, Wales, and Italy to shape and polish granite for the streets and buildings of America. Today, crushed stone is still removed almost daily from Lithonia’s quarries.
