Students of all ages who are interested in pursuing any number of certification or degree programs will find abundant opportunities close to home. Some of the choices that are most convenient to Butts County residents are Griffin Technical Institute, Gordon College, and the major universities in the metropolitan Atlanta area.

Sylvan Grove Hospital in Jackson, part of the Tenet Health System, serves as the primary resource. The small, historic city of Flovilla is the proud home of Indian Springs State Park, one of the nation’s oldest parks. Nestled in southern Butts County, Flovilla provides an intimate community atmosphere where neighbors stop to chat on the street or wave at each other from front porch swings. Recreational amenities are exceptional, with the state park offering 523 acres of facilities and lush open space. A number of camping options including cottages, a beach and 105-acre lake, boat ramp, miniature golf course, picnic shelters, pedal and fishing boat rentals, and a Native American museum are among the amenities and attractions. Popular annual events include the Southeastern Indian Celebration each June and the astronomy program in August. During the holiday season, friends, neighbors and family enjoy the Christmas at Idlewilde festivities.

Serving as the seat of county government as well as the hub of education, culture, and healthcare for the region, Jackson is a small but well-developed city. One of the historic and recreational highlights is the 995-acre High Falls State Park, preserving the remnants of a former 1800s industrial town. A scenic waterfall hike along the Towaliga River leads to the gristmill foundation or the 650-acre lake. Tent and trailer sites, a swimming pool, miniature golf, pioneer campsites, and a group shelter are among the amenities. A full-service hospital, an active retail district, good public schools, wonderful historic sites, and wonderful annual celebrations and events add to the quality of life in this small but vibrant city.
